Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a major risk factor that can lead to dire consequences if not managed carefully. Backed by evidence-based research, One Heart, Five Habits answers some of the questions that Dr. Sayeh Zielke (Dr. Z) is asked by patients in her cardiology clinic, and presents five lifestyle practices to help lower blood pressure.

Blood pounding through your body at excessive pressure affects your arteries and organs much as pounding waves affect rocks. The occasional storm won’t result in real damage to your favourite beach, but if that bad weather keeps up unabated, the shoreline will start to erode. As we grow older, blood pressure tends to increase and create strain on the heart and arteries. Although it is extremely common, hypertension is not necessarily a natural result of aging. High blood pressure mostly affects the populations of industrialized countries, and that’s because it can be a lifestyle disease, meaning it can be attributed mostly to excess sodium and insufficient potassium in our diets, a sedentary lifestyle, being overweight, or excess alcohol consumption.

In One Heart, Five Habits, you will learn to:

REDUCE your intake of substances that cause blood pressure to rise.

EAT your way to lower blood pressure, stocking your cupboards with tasty foods proven to decrease hypertension.

MOVE your body toward better health. Exercise can make a difference to your blood pressure directly, and helps maintain a healthy body weight, which is vital for blood pressure health as well.

Time for some well-deserved REST. Elevated blood pressure may be helped by sleeping well and enough, and on keeping stress levels under control.

Finally, MONITOR your progress. People who measure their blood pressure at home have more success at keeping it low. You record your progress easily with the One Heart Five Habits app — plus, you’ll track your new habits as they help you get healthier and stay that way.
